How Championship Belts Are Made: Inside Our Workshop
by 12StarsChampionship
A championship belt looks like one object, but it's really three trades meeting in the middle: leatherwork, metalwork and finishing โ done in that order, mostly by hand. This is the actual process behind every belt we ship, photographed in the Sialkot workshop where ours are built.
Why Sialkot?
Sialkot, in Pakistan's Punjab, is one of the world's great craft cities โ famous for generations of leatherwork and hand-made sports goods exported across the globe. Belt-making here isn't a factory line; it's a bench trade. The people cutting straps and laying enamel learned it the way trades are learned in Sialkot: from the craftsman at the next bench, often a father or an uncle. That inheritance is why a hand-tooled strap from this city feels different from anything stamped out by machine.

Step 1 โ The Strap: Genuine Cowhide
Every belt starts as a sheet of genuine cowhide leather. The strap is cut to an adult-size pattern (about 50 inches end to end), skived to an even thickness, and then embossed and hand-tooled โ the borders, textures and patterns you see around the plates are pressed and carved into the hide itself, not printed on it. The strap is then edge-finished and backed so it sits flat and heavy, the way a title should.
Step 2 โ The Plates: Metal, Not Plastic
The centerpiece and side plates are real metal โ this is the single biggest difference between a handcrafted belt and a toy. Designs are etched into brass or zinc plate stock in 2mm, 4mm or 6mm thickness: the thicker the plate, the deeper the relief and the heavier the belt on your shoulder. Boxing-style titles and our casted editions go a different route โ the design is cast as a single sculpted piece, which is how the originals of classics like the Smoking Skull were built.
Step 3 โ The Finish: From Brass to 24K to CNC
Finishing is where the tiers come from. An etched brass plate is the classic entry build. Zinc takes a brighter polish and crisper detail. 24K gold plating is exactly what it sounds like โ a real gold layer over the plate (our guide on whether championship belts are real gold covers this honestly). And at the top, CNC-machined plates are carved from metal by computer-guided cutting for the sharpest possible detail, then hand-finished. Colored designs get enamel laid by hand into the etched recesses, one color at a time, before a final polish.

Step 4 โ Assembly, Name Plate and Final Checks
Plates are drilled and mounted to the strap, snaps are set, and the belt gets its final inspection โ plate alignment, strap finish, enamel fill, weight. If your belt takes a free engraved name plate (most of ours do), it's fitted here. Then it's photographed, wrapped and handed to the courier.
Why Made-to-Order Takes Time
Nothing above sits in a warehouse. Your belt is started when you order it, which is why brass and zinc builds are typically ready to ship in around a fortnight, while 24K, CNC and casted editions โ with their extra plating, machining and hand-finishing passes โ can take up to six weeks. Every product page shows a live estimated-arrival date so you know before you buy. Full details are on our shipping page.
