The History of the WWE Championship: Every Belt & Era Explained
Updated June 2026 · by 12StarsChampionship
No prop in sports-entertainment is more iconic than the WWE Championship. Since 1963 it has been redesigned a dozen times, and for many fans the belt — not the wrestler — is what defines an era. The Winged Eagle is Hulk Hogan and Bret Hart. The Big Eagle is Stone Cold. The Spinner is John Cena. Here's the complete story of wrestling's most famous strap, era by era — and how to own a hand-crafted replica of the one that meant the most to you.
The Golden Age: The Winged Eagle (1988–1998)
Ask a fan to picture "the WWE title" and most see the Winged Eagle. Debuting in 1988, its broad gold eagle and pebbled gold plates carried Hulk Hogan, "Macho Man" Randy Savage, Ultimate Warrior, Bret "Hitman" Hart and Shawn Michaels through the company's first global boom. It remains the single most requested replica in our shop — our Premium Winged Eagle CNC replica and the HD Winged Eagle are built to the detail collectors expect. There's even the rare White Winged Eagle for fans of the striking light-leather variant.
The Attitude Era: The "Big Eagle" (1998–2002)
As WWE got louder, edgier and hotter in the ratings war, the title got bigger too. The Attitude-Era "Big Eagle" — a scaled-up, oval-plated evolution of the Winged Eagle — was the belt of Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock and Mankind, hoisted through beer baths and pyro. If you grew up on Monday Night Raw in the late '90s, this is your belt. Relive it with our Big Eagle Attitude Era CNC replica. The era also gave us one of the most beloved one-offs in history — Stone Cold's Smoking Skull Championship.
The "Big Gold" Lineage (WCW & Beyond)
Running parallel to WWE's eagle belts was arguably the most beautiful title ever made: the "Big Gold" belt. Born in WCW and carried by Ric Flair, Sting and countless legends, its ornate Crumrine plate work set the standard for prestige. WWE later folded the design into its own World Heavyweight lineage, and it lives on in today's revived World Heavyweight Championship. Collectors chase the 3D Big Gold Crumrine CNC, the classic Big Gold and the 24K-gold-plated Big Gold.
The Ruthless Aggression & Spinner Era (2002–2013)
The 2000s brought a bold, divisive redesign: the Spinner belt, introduced by John Cena in 2005, with a rotating WWE-logo centerpiece dripping in bling. Fans either loved it or hated it — but nobody forgot it, and it defined a full decade of programming. It's the belt that introduced WWE to a brand-new generation of kids who are today's adult collectors.
The Modern Era: The Undisputed Championship (2013–Today)
In 2013 WWE returned to a sleeker, premium look that has evolved into today's Undisputed WWE Championship — the flagship belt fans most want on their wall right now. Alongside it, the revived World Heavyweight Championship carries the Big Gold spirit forward. Both are available in every tier, from a solid everyday replica to a full 24K showpiece: see the Undisputed 24K replica and the World Heavyweight 24K replica.
