Stone Cold's Smoking Skull Belt: the History Behind Wrestling's Most Personal Title

Every other champion carried the company's belt. Stone Cold Steve Austin built his own. The Smoking Skull belt, all black leather, skulls and rattlesnakes, is the only world title in WWF/WWE history designed by the champion, for the champion, and it remains the most requested replica of the entire Attitude Era. Here's the real story.

July 27, 1998: the Night the Skull Arrived

On the July 27, 1998 episode of Monday Night Raw, Austin walked out for a confrontation with The Undertaker carrying a WWF Championship nobody had ever seen. Gone was the classic eagle design; in its place, a hand-tooled human skull wreathed in smoke, ringed in barbed wire, flanked by rattlesnakes, the whole Austin 3:16 persona cast in metal. The crowd understood instantly: this wasn't the company's title anymore. It was Austin's.

Built Behind the Boss's Back

By Austin's own telling, he never liked the standard belt, so he went straight to championship belt maker J-Mar and commissioned a custom title with skulls and rattlesnakes, without clearing it with Vince McMahon. The on-screen McMahon was furious, which only made the belt more perfect: the whole Austin–McMahon war, condensed into a single prop. Only a couple of originals were ever made, which is why authentic Smoking Skull memorabilia is among the most prized in wrestling collecting, and why replicas carry the legend for everyone else.

The Design, Detail by Detail

What makes the Smoking Skull unmistakable: the skull centerpiece with smoke curling from its sockets, a barbed-wire border around the main plate, rattlesnakes coiled at each side, "World Heavyweight Champion" across the banner, and smoking-skull side plates in place of the usual flags. It flipped every convention of championship design, where the eagle belts said institution, the skull said one man.
